Baby Gate. What to know

We bought the baby gate when my son was 7 months old. He was crawling all over the place and we thought that a baby gate in his room would be perfect for his safety.

Baby gates can be used at the top of the stairs, at the bottom of the stairs, or on the door frame.

Our baby gate was pressure-mounted and was installed from wall to wall, as there is a small hallway in the entrance of my son’s room and we preferred to have it there, instead of the door frame.

Before buying and installing the baby gate, there are a few things to consider:

  • There should be no more than 2.5 to 5 centimeters between the floor and the gate bottom to keep a child from slipping underneath

  • Slats or rods should be max 6 centimeters apart so that the child's head cannot be trapped

  • Make sure there are no sharp edges and pieces that could cut or hurt a baby or toddler

  • Don't buy gates with openings that could be used for climbing

  • The gate should be no less than three-quarters of the child's height

  • Keep large toys and other objects away from the gate as kids could use them to climb over

  • If your toddler can open a gate or climb over it, the gate should be removed

I can highly recommend a baby gate as it gave me the freedom of 2 minutes to run to the kitchen or to open our main door but babies or toddlers should not be left alone for too long.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and see you soon!

All the best,
